• Columbus announces winners of competition to promote STEM education

        •

Business services provider, Columbus UK, has announced the winners of its latest competition, hosted in June, to inspire students to take up STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects.

Primary school children from schools in Nottinghamshire were invited to design t-shirts that described what they think about STEM subjects, what inspires them every day, and what they think a future STEM career would look like. This is the latest in a series of STEM initiatives created by Columbus. The winners, from Holy Cross School in Hucknall and Hollywell Primary School in Kimberley, were announced earlier in July and presented with printed versions of their t-shirt designs by Mary Hunter, Managing Director of Columbus UK.

Mary was wearing the winning designs at the recent Microsoft Inspire event to promote awareness of STEM and encourage more role models to take part in inspiring the future generation of STEM experts. Microsoft Inspire is an annual event hosted by the company for their employees and global Microsoft partners, such as Columbus. This year, Mary has been awarded the IAMCP Women in Technology Leadership award, recognising her outstanding contributions to the Women in Tech community and her leadership excellence.

Mary Hunter, Managing Director, Columbus UK said, “we had some excellent entries from our talented youngsters, but the two winning designs from Holy Cross School and Hollywell Primary School demonstrated particularly well how important technology is to children in their everyday lives.

“The Columbus team had an excellent response to their t-shirts from attendees at Microsoft Inspire in Las Vegas, and we’re delighted to have had the opportunity to show off the passion and creativity of Nottingham schoolchildren and encourage other business leaders to become role models for future STEM experts.

“I believe business has a key role to play in promoting STEM among children and inspire the next generation of students, so we're proud to support schools in our community in any way we can. Since 2017, we've promoted the establishment of 'Code Clubs', donated equipment such as laptops to classrooms and hosted classes of primary school children at our Nottingham HQ for education days.”
