Business services company, Commercial Group has been shortlisted for the Sustainable Transport category of the Sustainable City Awards. The award scheme is run by the London Sustainability Exchange and funded by the City of London Corporation. It recognises best practice in environmental management and sustainable leadership amongst companies operating in the city.
Commercial Group’s entry focused on measures that have been taken to enhance the sustainability of its office supplies delivery fleet. When the Group acquired London-based, Wiles Greenworld in 2016, two innovative approaches were combined. The outcome is a solution that improves the fleet’s environmental impact.
One element of this strategy is the deployment of hydrogen-fuelled vehicles. This is complemented by Wiles Greenworld’s recycling service which is rooted in the collection of waste as a backload. Because vehicles are already ‘on patch’ the cost of collection is marginal, enabling the service to be provided to 300 London businesses free of charge. It also reduces traffic and congestion, two major factors that impact air quality in the city.
Jonathan Withey, Lead Sustainability Consultant at Wiles Greenworld said, “across the Group, we’ve put a lot of thought and investment into improving the environmental credentials of our fleet. We’ve trialled ground-breaking technologies and tested new approaches to develop a sustainable transport strategy that is both effective and commercially viable. Being recognised by the Sustainable City Awards underlines our success to date. Now we are actively engaging with programmes such as LoCity and Hydrogen London to share our learnings with organisations that are looking for ways to replicate this at a larger scale.”
The winners of the Sustainable City Awards will be announced at a ceremony on 5 July 2017. More details are available at http://www.lsx.org.uk/event/sustainable-city-awards-2017/.
