Searches for job sites in January jump year-on-year

Many of us see a new year as an opportunity for a fresh start. Health kicks, new hobbies, and other such personal goals are always popular choices. However, with cuts and closes in industries across the country, as well as an ongoing narrative of quiet quitting, are more people using the new year as a chance to find a new job? That’s what domains and hosting providers Fasthosts set out to discover.

Investigating the Google Trend data for various job sites, it compared its findings to the same period last year to figure out what’s changed.

Michelle Stark, Sales, and Marketing Director of Fasthosts said, “with recent findings showing that nearly 50 shops a day were closing in the UK last year, not to mention the layoffs sweeping the tech industry, we were sure that this would lead to an increased interest in job sites. Adzuna, a search engine for job postings across various sites, saw the greatest jump, seeing a massive increase of 159 per cent when compared to last January.

“Due to its nature as a search engine, this increase could very likely be due to people using it as an alternative to individual job sites — allowing access to a much larger database of vacancies in a much quicker time. Even generic searches for job vacancies had risen 10 per cent as Google displays not only the various job posting sites but also some it has discovered itself.

“Glassdoor leads the way, seeing a rise of 23 per cent since the same period in 2022 — which is certainly no small percentage. This is followed by CV Library with an increase of 16 per cent, 14 per cent for Indeed, 9 per cent for Gumtree jobs, and just 3 per cent for Reed. While some of these increases are much smaller than others, the fact that they’re still up across the board is a point of interest. Obviously, there are a variety of factors that can contribute to increased interest, even down to just the site itself becoming more popular, but every site seeing an increase would seem to imply that more people are in fact visiting these sites to look for work.

“The results we found are indicative of a possible surge in people searching for jobs in the new year. Although it’s hard to say how much of this is due to unemployment, and how much are thanks to people seeking new roles. However, when searches for the universal credit scheme are also up 10 per cent, it would seem to imply that a good amount of these increases will have in fact been due to the unfortunate consequences of the economic downturn. Whether this trend will continue as the year goes on remains to be seen, so let’s hope January can be a fresh start for all those who need it.”
